We're Back and We've Made some Tech Changes

Well, after over three year of quiet, We are back. We made it through the COVID pandemic, although sadly, I know folks who didn't.

I've made some changes to the site. It has been migrated from ASP.NET MVC 5 to ASP.NET Core MVC. One of the really cool features of .NET Core is that it can be hosted on Linux. This may not seem like a big deal, but it opened up the door to running the site as a containerized application. While its possible to containerize windows apps, the result is a massive container. A Linux based container can be much, much smaller. This makes CI\CD a breeze.

Also for a site like this that is totally non-profit, it is much cheaper to host as the container essentially runs on demand and if by chance, the site gets a lot of traffic at one time, it will automatically spin up multiple instances. If you came to this site while no containers were warm, you got the "Preparing your experience" loading window for about 20 seconds before the site loaded. If you came back a few minutes later, the loading window comes up for about 3 seconds as a container is already warm. For a site such as this one, this behavior is acceptable. If this ever became an issue, it is very easy to configure at least one container to always be warm, even be warm, say during business hours.

As far as the migration went, I got a lot of help from Microsoft Copilot. Copilot integrates into the Visual Studio 2022 application. It can lead you down a rabbit hole in a hurry if you aren't careful, but it can really be a time saver if used correctly.

Going back to the original topic, I'd like to think that there were lessons learned from the pandemic and pandemic response, but I think its pretty obvious that is not the case. The only lessons learned are how to exploit a crisis.
